A tap counts
on touch on lift after a hold
“On lift” lets a child slide to the right word before letting go. “After a hold” suits a child who drags a hand or rests it on the screen: only a finger that stays on one cell counts.

After a tap counts, taps in the next moment are ignored, so a tremor or an excited double-tap doesn't say “want want want”.

Any Bluetooth switch that types Space or Enter works; pair it in the iPad's Bluetooth settings. One switch: the highlight moves by itself; press to choose. Two switches: Space moves the highlight, Enter chooses. Leave iPad Switch Control off: Talk does its own scanning.

For children who can spell. An abc key appears next to speak: type a word or pick one of the guesses, then add it to the message. Typed words use the family voice once the voice maker is on this device (add any word in “Change the board” first); until then, the device's own voice.

Adds a show key next to speak. It fills the screen with the message, big, and says it: for a noisy shop, or to hand the iPad to someone. Tap anywhere to go back; turn around flips it for someone across the table.
